When it comes to spanking children, every parent has their own philosophy. What works for one mom may not work for the next. A prime example of this is the varying discipline styles of actresses Tia and Tamera Mowry. One sister spanks her children. The other does not. Both were spanked as children. During a recent interview with Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club, Tia briefly touched on her discipline philosophy and why she chooses talking over corporal punishment.
“You know, I was whooped,” she said of her upbringing. “My mom, she was very, very strict, still is. I grew up being spanked. It’s awesome and it’s great to an extent if that’s the way you want to parent, but I see it differently.”
According to the mother of 8-year-old Cree and 1-year-old Cairo, feeling the need to spank children suggests impatience on behalf of parents.
“If you’re spanking your kid, in my opinion, it’s because of you; it’s because of you and where you are in your headspace. You’re impatient, you just want to get this done and over with whereas I feel like if you don’t spank them, then it takes more time, you have to talk to them, you have to explain. But I feel like there is, in my opinion, a better outcome because you’re explaining and you’re saying why as opposed to just hitting them. But that’s just my opinion.”
While she has strayed away from her traditional upbringing, her sister, Tamera, is okay with spanking her children.
“She does, she spanks her children,” the actress revealed. “I don’t.”
And as with any mama who chooses not to hit her kids — and even some who do — Mowry is not okay with her sister or anyone else putting their hands on her children.
“Huh? Oh no no no no no,” she responded when asked if it would be okay for Tamera to spank her kiddos.
Do you spank your children? Why or why not?
