Baby comb for natural hair

When I gave birth to my daughter, I was surprised to see that she had a head full of tight black curls. Since day one, I was devoted to handling her natural curls with care. I wanted to give her hair the healthy start that many of us did not have the luxury of getting back in the day because so little was known about black hair care. I carefully researched which head-to-toe washes would be ideal and gentle enough for her hair. I researched which oils would be best to seal in the moisture after a wash. I ordered her an adorable little baby grooming kit and sleep bonnet. I was set – until about one month in when her texture started to thicken up. That cute little baby comb from the grooming kit was absolutely useless. I attempted to use my adult combs on her to no avail and so began my quest for styling tools that are infant-friendly. Finding a comb that is sturdy enough to detangle thick curls yet gentle enough not to cause pain to an infant’s sensitive scalp proved to be quite the challenge.

While scrolling through Amazon after a 2 am feeding, which is usually when I shop for all of my baby gear, I came across Summer & West’s Premium Baby Brush Box Set.

The set, which is crafted from natural beechwood, comes with one wide-tooth comb, a soft brush crafted from goat’s hair bristles, and a massage brush for easy, pain-free detangling.

I placed my order for the set on a Saturday and it arrived by Sunday, which was perfect since Sunday was wash day. The first thing that I noticed about the styling tools was how sturdy and well-crafted they are. The teeth on the comb are especially smooth, which put my mind at ease as I am always concerned about combs being too rough against her scalp.

I used the comb and was able to gently detangle her hair during the wash. I was impressed by how the comb was able to glide through her hair with minimal snags. After towel blotting her hair and applying a moisturizer, I continued to detangle using the comb, then followed up with the massage brush, which was also very gentle on her scalp, but efficient at getting out tangles. Lastly, I used the soft brush to lay down her edges.

I would definitely recommend this set to anyone who is caring for babies with textured hair.
